Rites of War

Gravity and Levity, Shift 2008Gravity and Levity have been awarded Arts Council of England funding towards the production and tour of ‘Rites of War’. Premiering in Spring 2014 at Stratford Circus, London, this piece will tour through 2014 and beyond during this 4 year period of remembrance for The Great War, and we are excited to be hosting one of the productions as part of Mobilisation.

Gravity & Levity was launched in 2003 by Artistic Director, Lindsey Butcher, to explore the creative and expressive potential in applying a dance aesthetic to aerial suspension techniques, through artistic development, teaching and live productions. Their work that is accessible, relevant and offers an alternative perspective on traditional aesthetics in both dance and circus.

Rites_of_War_poppy_webRGB_1200x1200px-560x525‘Rites of War’ is a full length, narrative led, aerial dance theatre performance combining a commissioned sound-score with film, animation and current news commentary to tell the stories of two soldiers from two separate wars: the Great War and current day Afghanistan, revealing the ugly truths and occasional searing beauty of living and loving through conflicts, then and now.

Fusing Darshan Singh Bhullers’ narrative driven and powerful choreographic style with Lindsey Butcher and the casts expressive aerial dance vocabulary, this piece brings together an impressive team of creative collaborators and advisors including : David Loyn, the BBC’s correspondent in Afghanistan, set, lighting and graphic designer Will Reynolds and Thor McIntyre Burnie as composer, together with our Centenary partners, The Imperial War Museum to create a visceral and emotive production for our audiences reflecting on how war shapes all of our lives.
